As a child, Peg Kulon had very little interaction with the medical community. Her parents typically treated their family's health needs using holistic methods, and Peg remembers at six years of age visiting a reflexologist with her mother. After becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist (L.M.T.) and receiving her licensure from the State of Ohio Medical Board in 1999, Peg founded Massage Therapy Beyond 2000 in Strongsville, Ohio in June 2000. We visited with Peg recently, and listened as she provided this overview of her services;
Massage Therapy Beyond 2000 provides a wide range of holistic modalities for clients ranging from age 3 to 94. My services include therapeutic pain management, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, Reiki, sports massage, Cranial Sacral, lymphatic drainage, and structural integration. Rather than being limited to one or two modalities, I have many approaches at my disposal to treat my clients' varied needs. In addition, I am also a Certified Equine Therapist.
It is important to understand that preventive health care can be started anytime, and that emotions can be closely related to physical ailments. While western medicine is focused on treating specific areas of the body, I seek to understand my clients' physical, mental, and spiritual beings, as well. Emotions create havoc in everyone, and many of the people I see are stressed, but don't know why. As I begin to learn their body patterns, their emotional patterns also become evident and they are quite often able to improve their physical wellbeing by coming to terms with the underlying emotional issues. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my clients' faces as they come to the realization that it is very possible for them to feel better.
Every muscle fiber in your body has its own memory that begins the day you were born. If you had a rough delivery, fell down the stairs when you were two years old, or fell from your bicycle when you were fifteen, your body remembers it throughout your entire life. When a client who is suffering pain comes to me, I ask them to retrace their life and recall any injuries they have had in the past so I can begin to create an anatomy train. An anatomy train is nothing more than the pathway from the original injury to the present day. This end point is when the body cannot adjust itself any more and the pain begins. As therapists, we try to identify the dysfunction by using different techniques, thus helping the body's soft tissue memories to return to a healthier state.
A typical massage lasts about an hour and a half, although I do offer spot sessions and half hour massages depending on the individual's needs. For clients with specific injuries to their neck, shoulders, lower backs, or legs, I start working from their feet and relax everything from the bottom of their body to the top. By the time I am ready to work on the affected area, the surrounding areas have been relaxed to the point that I can move through the restrictions with little intensity. As circulation increases and their body begins to release endorphins, they feel a sense of euphoria and become much more relaxed and comfortable.
Massage therapy can alleviate soft tissue distress, increase circulation to clean all tissues and major organs of the body, and establish a state of relaxation that assist the body's own natural healing process.
